Why psychotherapy and not medication?

The idea of being able to solve your problems by taking the right medicine every day may sound appealing, and I wish it was. Mental and emotional problems usually have multiple causes, and medication is not a panacea. It can "relieve" the symptoms, but it can also have side effects and often does not cure the problem completely. Psychotherapy can be time-consuming and not without its own difficulties, as "unpleasant" feelings and thoughts surface along the way. However, psychotherapy provides long-term benefits and support. Recognizing and dealing with the root causes of one's emotional or mental problems not only provides relief but also arms the person to avoid similar situations in the future.

Psychotherapy also teaches skills related to managing emotions and gradually changing behavior.

Psychotherapy is for people who want to face their fears with courage, who want to expand their lives and achieve personal and professional goals.

It offers a way to gain a broader "perspective" regarding our behavior, emotions and relationships.

It provides a way to express our feelings and thought patterns.

It relieves anxiety, depression and anger in its many forms.

It helps us develop communication skills to deal with conflicts and frustrations.

It is a way of dealing with emotional pain or loss, and adding meaning to our lives.

Psychotherapy a way to release

Sand play therapy

In the Sandplay method, the client creates representations in a container of sand, using miniatures that the client selects from a shelf.

ADULTS

For adults, the temporary "bypass" of language achieved when expressing oneself through Sandplay is useful because it provides an opportunity to move away from all ingrained ways of thinking about the issues that concern us, and to access our inner world more directly.

Couples counseling

Two people are usually brought into marriage by having the best feelings for each other. But there are times when they get into constant fights.

Children

For preschoolers, the Sandplay method seems attractive, because it is a type of play that the child finds natural. But it also gives the opportunity to overcome the difficulty the child has in understanding and answering questions about his feelings or explaining how he feels with sufficient precision.

Sand Play helps the therapist guide the child through ways of expressing themselves that are friendlier and less stressful than a question-and-answer discussion.

Visual

therapy

Visual therapy is the therapeutic use of art (drawing, painting, etc.) in the context of the psycho-therapeutic relationship, by people experiencing mental illness, psychological trauma or seeking inner development. It uses visual arts as a means of communication that facilitates emotional expression, combined with classical counseling and psychotherapy, to improve the individual's emotional and mental state.

It is not necessary to have drawing or painting skills to participate in art therapy.

Art is used exclusively as a communication tool between psychotherapist and patient.

DOROTHEA TSOUROU

I was born in Kavala where I grew up and then I studied psychology at the philosophy department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

I have worked as a volunteer in various

structures in the city and I have participated in a number of seminars with different topics about the age group children and teenagers. During my undergraduate studies, I carried out my internship at the psychological laboratory of the Department of Psychology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, specifically in the study of cognitive functions and assessment methods in people with mild cognitive impairment. There I trained in the administration of metacognitive tools for neurodegenerative disorders. Then I participated in research on assessment of the level of metacognitive processes and interventions to strengthen them.

I am employed and conduct individual sessions with teenagers and adults. I also provide therapeutic support to families, parents and couples using both visual and sand play therapy methods.

I specialize in issues such as anxiety, depression, phobias, substance abuse, panic attacks, relationship problems, psychosomatic problems, eating disorders, self-esteem and issues related to sexuality and career orientation. Difficulties, concerns, impasses, conflicts and anything that burdens them psychologically and emotionally are explored in the meetings with the stakeholders.
